Armed conflict, institutional fragility and environmental pressures increasingly intersect across the region. Their consequences depend on governance, resource access and the capacity of institutions and communities to respond.

RAAD examines insurgency, counter-terrorism, armed groups, security transitions, peace operations and the political conditions shaping security outcomes. Research also addresses cross-border armed networks, illicit finance, maritime insecurity and the movement of weapons and technical capabilities.
Environmental research covers climate change, drought, flooding, land degradation, water scarcity, natural resource governance, adaptation and displacement.
The programme examines how environmental pressures affect livelihoods and institutional resilience without treating climate change as an automatic cause of conflict.
