Programme 01

Regional and Global Geopolitics

Regional rivalries, shifting alliances and external competition increasingly shape the East and Horn of Africa. Yet regional actors are not passive: they negotiate, resist and use international engagement to advance their interests.

Regional rivalries, shifting alliances and external competition increasingly shape the East and Horn of Africa. Yet regional actors are not passive: they negotiate, resist and use international engagement to advance their interests. RAAD examines major-power competition, US and EU strategies, China's engagement, Russia's role, Türkiye's expanding relationships, Gulf policies and the strategic importance of the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. The programme assesses how international engagement reshapes political incentives, security relationships and economic opportunities, with implications for sovereignty, stability and strategic autonomy.
