Programme 02

Peace, Conflict and Political Settlements

Conflict reflects more than military competition. Contested authority, political exclusion, unresolved centre–periphery relations and competition over power and resources often sustain violence long after its immediate causes have changed.

Conflict reflects more than military competition. Contested authority, political exclusion, unresolved centre–periphery relations and competition over power and resources often sustain violence long after its immediate causes have changed. RAAD examines state formation, federalism, political legitimacy, negotiations, reconciliation, peacebuilding and institutional reform. Drawing on research into Somalia's political transitions, insurgency and territorial disputes, the programme investigates how political incentives, historical grievances and institutional arrangements shape the prospects for settlement or renewed confrontation.
